Travel

The UK’s travel industry is big business with a staggering 70.8 million visits overseas by UK residents in 2016 during which £43.8 billion was spent. Holidays are still by far the most common reason for travel abroad and the most popular countries to visit are Spain, France, Italy, the Republic of Ireland and the US, in that order. Other key statistics are:

  • The average length of visits to EU countries is eight nights;
  • Countries where visits tended to be shorter included Belgium (three nights) and the Netherlands (four nights);
  • Visits to North America are longer than to Europe (14 nights) and longest in “other countries” outside Europe and North America (21 nights).
